An aging man returns to his bucolic roots, hoping to find and tell the story of his humble ancestors, the berry pickers. Instead, he uncovers a cult of bible tyrants, disinformation, corruption, brainwashing, abuse, and torture.
The once amusing antics of a handful of moonshiners, conmen and snake-oil salesmen devolve over time to a national movement that pulls at the tenuous fabric that holds American society together. Truth itself is no longer an absolute, just another part of the narrative.
The Berry Pickers by William Lobb is a tale that may be a reflection of a current sub climate in the States. It’s possibly a venture into a microcosm of what it would be like if certain groups in the US become powerful. If you are a fan of Lobb’s previous works, you will love The Berry Pickers as it features his distinct style of crafty diction, a strong voice, and well-developed characters. This is another home run by an extremely talented author.

The author has taken quite a risk with a sinister plotline. I admire the courage and the bold narrative. A story is an expression of our imagination or fantasy. This book combines the two in a fictional manner delivering a powerful message as an undertone. I am always on a lookout for deep meaning stories. This one is beautifully titled and written, impressing me all the way through.
Reverend Jimmy B. Tester is a character I have come to despise as intended. He is dark and twisted derailing the lives of many. The author brings forth the autocracies that our world is still in the grips of. Many parallels are to be drawn here. The most impactful way to send a message in a book is by veiling it as a fiction. This one did just that and with an interesting bunch of characters.
I highly recommend this one is profanity is not an issue.
